美国医学学术界也造假

  这几天看到新闻报道对Anil Potti, Joseph Nevins,etc 2006年以来发表的关于某些基因能预测肿瘤化疗效果的系列文章的质疑。其中Anil Potti更由于在申请 American Cancer Society grant 的resume上造假被 Duke 作administrative leave.

  看到这些新闻感到很震惊。2007年的时候Anil他们报导这些发现被认为是肿瘤治疗的突破。Anil当然被邀请到处演讲，还上了电视，当时我们公司也请了他来讲。07年8月在芝加哥的investigator meeting上见过他， 觉得他是一个很和善，谦逊的学者，很难把他和学历作假联系起来。Totally a shock!

  当时听他讲他们的研究，觉得研究设计也是比较经典易懂的，结果也很promising。当然对基因检测的数据不熟悉，对他们数据分析也很难有什么评断。

  现在报道的问题是有2个统计学家发现的。他们在anil发表文章所用的原始数据发现了一些错误，如sample mislabelling, columns switched等。纠正了这些错误后，那些基因就不再有预测作用了。

  Dr. Michael Cuffe, vice president of medical affairs at Duke, said    

    ...."There are some issues of data integrity that have been alleged, but also complex issues as to the statistics and nature of the science, and that is different," Cuffe said. "Scientific debate is different from misconduct. And I think we need to resolve both. Some sort of national body devoid of Duke would help us all reach a conclusion so all of us can move forward."

   比起industry的研究, 一般人都比较信任academy的研究. 但是很具有讽刺意味的是academy的研究经常data integrity是一个大问题。 如果用academy研究用的data 去submit new drug application, 往往FDA那里data integrity这一关就通不过。药厂就得花钱重新再做一遍试验。

   如何对academy的研究进行regulation,是美国医学界未来必须要重视的问题。否则anil这样的例子还会不断出现。
